Media and storage
Bring images and videos together in Media blocks. Learn about Pro video uploads, private playback, the media bin, photo generation and shared storage.
From everyone’s photos to a journey
- Open your journey in Edit and leave its timeline empty. Choose Open media bin, beside Share, to open All media. Upload all the photos you want to include from your journey, in batches if needed. They can stay in the media bin without adding blocks to the story.
- Want to include your companions’ photos? The owner can invite multiple people as editors through Share. Each person must sign in and accept the invitation before uploading into the same media bin. View-link recipients cannot upload photos. See Share a journey below for invitation details.
- Keep the page open and wait for everyone’s uploads and processing to finish before making the preview. Check for failed or unfinished uploads and retry or cancel them as needed; failed uploads are not included.
- Choose Generate from photos in Edit. It appears only on an empty timeline with at least one ready uploaded image. Review the preview’s days, photos, maps and warnings. Nothing is added yet, and you can cancel without changing the timeline.
- When the preview looks right, choose Generate journey to confirm. Generated dates and map locations become part of the journal, visible to anyone you share it with. The result is editable: change headings, captions, photo order, places and travel modes, or add your own stories.
Generate from photos is image-only: videos are not generation sources. Day 1, Day 2 and so on follow the chronological capture dates represented by your photos. They use each photo’s local capture date, not its upload date or your browser’s timezone. Only dates with dated photos get a day: a gap in dates does not create an empty day. Undated photos are skipped but remain in the media bin’s All media for you to use manually.
Within each day, photos are arranged chronologically into visits within 2 km of each visit’s first located photo. Returning to a place after another visit makes a new visit, rather than merging the two. Dated photos without GPS form one unlocated group at the end of their day.
Each day can have one approximate map when it has at least two located visits. Its straight lines are not an exact route or navigation directions. Travel guesses are conservative and editable: only Walk or Plane when the available capture-time and location evidence supports them; otherwise Other. Photo metadata can be missing or wrong, so check the result rather than treating a guess as proof of how you travelled.
A map keeps at most 20 visits: first and last, then the largest photo groups, with ties settled by visit order. The selected stops stay chronological, and all dated photos remain in collections even if their visit is omitted from the map. The preview explains undated skips and map simplification.
Generation does not rearrange or replace an existing timeline. Confirmation checks that the timeline is still empty, uploads are finished and the preview is current; retrying the same confirmation does not duplicate content. If source photos or the journey change, make a fresh preview. A result over the journey’s block limit must be reduced before confirmation.
Add and arrange media
- You can also build Media blocks yourself or add to the generated story. In Edit, use Add media to add a Media block, then upload there or choose Add from media bin when items not yet in that block are available. The Add media shortcut on an empty journey opens the media bin instead. Open media bin opens All media whenever you want to manage the journey’s library.
- Choose existing journey media or upload new files. Free supports up to 1,000 photos at a time; Pro supports up to 10,000 photos at a time. Each Media block supports up to 10,000 images. Keep the page open while files upload and process; uploads can also stay in the media bin without being placed in the story.
- Reuse an image or video in more than one Media block without uploading it again. Each placement has its own caption and order. A caption also describes the media for people using a screen reader. Covers are image-only: choose Use as cover on a favourite photo, not a video.
- A single image displays inline and a single video has an inline player. Multiple images, videos or a mix appear as thumbnail tiles; opening a tile opens the lightbox, where videos autoplay subject to browser playback rules. In Edit, open an item to change its details.
Pro video uploads and private playback
The person uploading must have Pro and permission to edit the journey. Pro is checked on that uploader’s account, not the journey owner’s account. It is currently a server-controlled account flag enabled administratively, not a subscription or purchase flow.
All authorized readers can watch videos placed in the story without Pro: the owner, accepted editors and people with an active view link. Pro controls uploading, not viewing. View-link readers cannot open unused media-bin videos.
Videos use Cloudflare Stream private signed playback and thumbnails. Playback credentials expire after five minutes; new credentials require current journey access. Revoking access prevents new credentials, but previously issued credentials may work until they expire. Access controls cannot recall recordings or copies already saved.
- Video formats: MP4, MOV and WebM, up to 3 GB per file and up to 10 minutes long. Select up to 100 videos at a time. Videos upload using resumable TUS transfers. All limits apply. Wait for processing to finish before playback is ready.
- Videos cannot be journey covers or sources for Generate from photos. Pro also increases photo file and selection limits, but does not retain original images.
A private library for each journey
The media bin belongs to one journey. Its owner and accepted editors can browse it; people with view links cannot browse the library, upload media or open unused images or videos. Viewers can see media placed in the story and the image used as its cover.
Unused ready images and videos stay in All media and use the owner’s storage until explicitly deleted, or until the journey or owning account is deleted. Removing a media placement or Media block does not delete its library item. Reusing one item does not use another copy’s storage.
Deleting media from the media bin permanently removes it from every Media block and clears any image cover use. Media blocks left empty are removed too. Read the confirmation carefully: this cannot be undone.
Keep your original photos
Logaway stores smaller WebP display images and thumbnails, not uploaded originals. Originals are held temporarily for processing, then cleaned up; they are not a permanent archive. Published images are resized and embedded metadata is removed. Generation separately retains only selected capture date/time and GPS metadata privately on journey assets; it does not retain arbitrary camera metadata or originals. Animated images become still pictures.
Keep your originals in your own photo library or backup service, especially if you may want to print or edit them later. A Logaway journal is not a replacement for your original-photo backup.
Supported files
- JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF and HEIC/HEIF are accepted. Not every HEIF variant is supported; if one is rejected, export it as JPEG and try again.
- Each source image can be up to 20 MB on Free or 50 MB on Pro. Both memberships allow up to 60 megapixels and 16,000 pixels on either side. Reduce a file’s size or dimensions if it exceeds a limit.
- JPEG XL is not supported. Pro video uploads accept MP4, MOV and WebM within the separate video limits above.
Storage and upload limits
- Select up to 1,000 photos at once on Free or 10,000 on Pro. Each Media block supports up to 10,000 images and a journey supports up to 1,000 timeline blocks. These are selection limits, not guaranteed storage for a whole batch.
- The journey owner’s existing 1 GB image-storage allowance is shared by everyone contributing to the journey. Videos use a separate owner budget of 120 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes per video. Contributions from editors and unused media count towards the owner’s applicable allowance, not the editor’s. Reusing stored media does not duplicate its storage. Pro does not increase these storage budgets.
- Up to ten uploads can be pending at once. Each user can start up to 1,000 new uploads per day; starting an upload can use one of these slots even if it does not finish. Larger selection limits do not bypass storage, pending-upload or per-image limits.
If an upload fails
- Check your connection and keep the editor open. There is no offline upload queue.
- Read the message next to the failed item. Retry a temporary failure. For photos, use a smaller file or export as JPEG for a size or format error. For videos, check that your account has Pro, use MP4, MOV or WebM, and keep within both the 3 GB and 10-minute limits and the owner’s remaining video budget.
- If the owner’s allowance or daily limit is reached, adding the same photo again will not bypass it. Free storage or wait for the daily limit to reset before retrying.
- Check that your images and videos have finished uploading and processing and open correctly before removing any local copies. Keep the originals backed up separately.
